Why I’m Teaching Canva (And Why That Might Surprise You)
Hi, I’m Megan Crane — founder of Crane Design Co., a graphic designer, content creator, and marketing educator with over 15 years of experience.
And when Canva first came out, I’ll be honest — I thought it was silly.
I had spent over a decade studying graphic design. Learning typography. Layout. Brand systems. Investing in professional software. Refining an eye for detail that only comes with time and experience.
And suddenly, design felt like it was available to everyone.
At the time, it honestly felt like Canva was trying to replace graphic designers. And to be fair… a lot of what I was seeing early on wasn’t very good. I could immediately tell what was built in Canva and what was built by a trained designer.
But we were all learning.
Designers were experimenting. Businesses were experimenting. The platform was evolving.
And so was I.
What Changed My Perspective
As I continued working with business owners across different industries, I kept hearing the same things:
“We don’t have the budget for an in-house designer.”
“Would you sit with our marketing assistant and help her learn Canva?”
“My wife handles our graphics — she just needs structure.”
“We just want our content to look more professional.”
At first, I resisted.
I thought, I’m not going to teach Canva.
But here’s what I realized: Canva wasn’t the problem.
It was a lack of structure.
As a trained designer, I picked up on Canva quickly because the principles are the same — hierarchy, spacing, alignment, brand consistency. The tool may be different, but the foundation doesn’t change.
What I didn’t realize at first was that most people weren’t struggling because they weren’t creative.
They were struggling because they didn’t have a system.
How I Use Canva Today
Now? I use Canva all the time.
I upload full brand kits for my clients.
I build social media templates so their teams can stay consistent.
I create mockups for swag, stickers, and retail concepts.
I streamline content systems.
When used strategically, Canva is one of the most powerful tools a business can have.
Not as a replacement for design expertise — but as an extension of it.
And that’s exactly why I decided to teach Canva for Business.
